Pepper Spray Comparison

Pepper Spray Comparison Chart

With all the different Pepper Spray models out on the market how do you know that the one you are looking at is the best? I started doing some research in order to create a simple pepper spray comparison chart reviewing all the relevant features of the leading pepper sprays models on the market like Sabre Red, Mace, Fox Labs, Wildfire, Spitfire and Streetwise.

I started to gather the information from the different manufacturers, including formulations, SHU, dispersal patterns, delivery methods (Spray, foam or gel), and then it hit me, that when it comes to pepper spray what really matter, what the manufacturer says it does, or what it does.

Here are some information that I pulled from some of the their sites.

This Pepper spray contains 10% oleoresin capsicum measuring 2,000,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), producing 1.33% major capsaicinoids. Independent laboratory testing found SABRE RED to be 8% to 86% stronger than the competition.

For professional security experts, Fox Labs is one of the most trusted names in defense. Specializing in professional-grade pepper spray, Fox makes products designed to be used in conjunction with other security products like firearms and batons. Their line of pepper spray is tough, strong, and won’t let you down when you need it most.

Simply stated, in their categories, these are the best products in the world. All of these units, unless noted otherwise, are in-stock containing our famous 2% formulas using 5.3 million SHU OC resin. All FOX formulas are non-flammable and Taser safe

Wildfire 18% pepper spray is hot, hot, hot. Wildfire is 18% Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) pepper spray…a derivative of 3 Million Scoville Heat Units (SHU’s). Wildfire is one of the most popular pepper spray brands because of its reliability as well as its searing 3,000,000 Scoville Heat Unit formula. The Wildfire 18% formula is a popular and extremely effective model for protecting the Home or RV, due to the larger sizes available.

One thing you will notice is that almost all of them claim to be the hottest or best on the market and this simply can’t be. The product has to be just as hot or the Hottest. Most of them claim to be the hottest available. What I know for a fact is that It truly does not matter what the Scoville Heat Unit is advertised by most of the pepper spray manufacturers. Streetwise is the only model that I know that is currently Lab certifies and tested so that you will know just how hot the product is when it hits your attacker’s face. So when most models tell you they have an SHU rating of 2,000,000 or 8,000,000 it really does not matter. Companies such as fox labs, pepper shot, mace, and most other companies advertise the SHU rating BEFORE it is put into the canister, which means nothing to you. It’s like those ¼ pound hamburgers, that is the weight before cooking, the cooked burger that is delivered to you is much less than the ¼ pound..

Although many pepper spray brands claim to be the best on the market, we recommend you consider the unbiased results of an independent laboratory* that tests the heat of the pepper once it is sprayed out of the can. The Certified Heat Rating (CHR) measures how hot the pepper spray will be once it comes in contact with your attacker.

Streetwise 23 Pepper Spray has a CHR of over 230,000 SHU making it one of the hottest, most effective self-defense sprays on the market. For comparison, the independent laboratory tested competing brands. They found the average heat rating to be 123,000 SHU, making Streetwise 23 over 87% hotter than the competition!

Streetwise 18 Pepper Spray has a CHR of over 180,000 SHU making it one of the hottest, most effective self-defense sprays on the market. For comparison, the independent laboratory tested competing brands. They found the average heat rating to be 123,000 SHU, making Streetwise 18 over 46% hotter than the competition!

They guarantee when you spray their defense spray that a CHU ratings (depending on the product) will COME OUT OF THE CANISTER. Not what it is before it goes into the canister which is not important to you at all

So when you see Saber Red, Wildfire, Mace, Spitfire or peppershot or any other pepper spray brand that advertises 2,000,000 – 8,000,000 SHU’s or whatever the number may be. Give them a call or send them an email and ask them what the guaranteed heat rating or certified Heat Rating is when the product is LEAVING THE canister?

NOTE: Pepper Spray companies are constantly revising their formula to make their products more effective. So this information is subject to change. The five leading brand as of their writing are Streetwise 23%,  Guard Dog, Streetwise 10%, an Streetwise 18%, an Wildfire 18%. Other effective brands include Crime Halter, Pepper Shot, PSP, and Cheetah.  is dedicated to providing you with the best and most affordable personal protection products on the market to meet the security needs of you, your family members or your business, by assisting anyone who is unwilling to become a victim of crime.
